I strode into the stables. I stopped in the doorway, I breathed in the scent of the all to familiar place. I had loved it here, but I had to go. A better place in a new town awaited me and Remi, the others would stay until I was comfortable in the new stables. I was going for a ride one last time here with Remi, so I dropped my stuff off at the tack room and headed towards the paddocks. As usual, as soon as Remi heard me she came cantering gracefully across the paddock, nickering her fond greetings. I put on her halter and led her up to the cross-ties. I groomed her until she shone, I wanted to take my time, I wanted to spend my last time here remembering. When Remi's brilliant bay coat gleamed and shone I went to get her tack. I put on her bright purple polo's, but not before she threw her leg up in protest. I told her to stop and finished putting them on. After that I put on her saddle pad, saddle, girth and bridle, and led her to the outdoor arena. Once in, I tightened the girth and sprang lightly into the saddle. I gathered my reins and stirrups and clucked her to walk. Her smooth stretching walk had us gliding across the arena. Satisfied she was warmed up, I gently pushed her into a ground-covering, graceful trot, and as we moved around the ring, became one. Her muscles bunched under her, she wanted to canter. A gentle lift and her light, springy canter emerged from the little mare. Flying lead changes came out in neat serpentines, and I pointed her towards the jump. A wide vertical of 4 feet rushed up towards us, and Remi sprang perfectly over it. Her jumping style was impeccable, she so enjoyed doing it. I checked the time, it was late. My ride would be here soon, and Remi's too. I walked her out, untacked her, and put her in her stall where she munched happily on hay. I said my goodbyes to my other horses, promising to come for them soon. A car engine rumbled in the distance, so I walked out of the barn and into the car with only one look back.
