Peeking over the gate, I saw Tucker. Laying lazily in his pen, he opened his eyes. "C'mon, Tux," I said. His ears perked up, then slowly but surely, he got up. He shyed away from the halter and lunge line in my hands, but he wasn't fast enough. Starting at a walk, he was going nice and steady. Soon enough, we were almost up to a canter. He looked at me in the most peculiar way. Slowing down to a trot, then a walk, he spooked. The line slipped out of my hands, giving them both a horrible burning sensation. "Whooo, boy," I said to calm him down. He breathed in and out so fast. There were many deer on a nearby hill. This was probably the closest thing to another horse he had seen in weeks. Being out on the ranch, we were alone. He needed some comfort. I took the halter off cautiously. Enough for today, I guess, I thought to myself. Maybe tomorrow.

Waking up and getting out was like going through the center of a hurricane for me. When I got to the barn, Tucker greeted me by neighing soflty. Today was the perfect day for a ride. But first we had to lunge for a while. He glided along the ground like rain sliding down a metal roof. When we had both stopped to take a breath, the warm, summer morning sun was just getting over the gently rolling hills. "Now is the time, what are you waiting for?" Tucker's face seemed to say...he was right.
